Hi Maddie!

This is for my mom and grandma because i really miss home That is all. Love love love, Z

p.s. I promised more shots of Prescott College…coming soon :)

Hey Maddie!
I’m going to be honest: you have me hooked on tumblr - so much so that this morning I woke up early to hit the gym, despite every once of my being fighting me, begging me not to venture into the cold of the early morning, because of some things I read on reasonstobefit! That’s what reminds me of this second ad I found on google, but was originally in ma’s Runners World.
And because of that tomorrow will be my rest day! (light yoga/stretch day) and also the day I do something about all those pictures in Phoenix (does anyone else have to pronounce it Pho-e-nix to spell it?) and Tuscon - I swear!
I love rest days. Rest days keep me sane. I am usually “all or nothing,”which is great at helping me kick butt in some aspects of my life…but not so bueno for others. Being all or nothing is basically the mindset that says if it’s not perfect…
if I can’t work out every single day doing this many reps of something or doing a certain distance in a certain amount of time
…then it’s not worth doing.
But of course we can never really be perfect!
This is why in the past I have failed to make fitness my way of life: because when its perfection vs. nothing, you usually end up with nothing.
Finally reaching my rest day for the week helps me to remember to strive for “progress not perfection.” It helps me remember that it’s okay to take a break to allow recovery time for my muscles while teaching that it’s just a break - not forever.
What I dooo hope lasts forever: how great it feels to get a little stronger every week and see muscle tone returning to these once skaters legs :) Maybe this time next year I’ll not only be scaling El Paso’s Franklin Mountains with much more ease, but I’ll also be racing my boyfriend to the top. being strong again - there’s no better feeling.

Filler for Friday - including one I have never put up anywhere

It’s poor quality but these are some of my last at TCU -Fall 10. The first was a day Erica and I finally got smart and brought 99cent candy for the movies when there it costs like 4 bucks (in my Panhellenic inspired white v-neck and nike shorts even though I was alll MGC). the second was studying in Smith Hall.

My my times are a changing

This is a filler for Thursday - one of my all time favorites of Erica taken at La Gran Plaza which isn’t online now nor was it when i had my first fb- back when I had that apartment by TCU and Kroger

This is a filler for Tuesday (Havin technical difficulties with the camera phone :(
I found this in my mom’s runner’s magazine Freshman year. She is my original inspiration to get fit and this ad just really got me going the first time I got really into fitness. Remember that picture of my window with a bunch of little dodads?Right below “I <3 Pie” is the cutout of this ad. I’ve had it up even in the months I never even laced up my Pumas. This month, with the help of a little inspiration from tumblr :), I begin again hoping this will the the 3rd and final time I try to make a habit of hitting the trails and the gym, just like my mama,
for life.

I just remembered (well hello, Zoe, it’s right above your head every night as you sleep…and right beside you as you’re tumblin…)

that I too have a 1974 NatGeo map of England (and Scotland, and Wales, and Ireland, and Northern Ireland because I don’t descriminate against the rest of my British Isles in favor of the country with all of my favouuurite soccer men)

I also didn’t mark all over mine…because I wouldn’t dream defiling it…but if I did Dover would be double circled and then starred with arrows pointing saying “goal in life”…London would have the same. It has more to do with song lyrics than anything else, really…they just make me feel like I must embark on some sort of pilgramage…

“Here on these cliff of Dover, so high you can’t see over. And while your head is spinning, hold tight it’s just beginning…”

“Woke up in London yesterday Found myself in the city near Picadilly don’t really know how I got here…”

Yeah…Sometimes I dream I’m spontaneous like that…just wake up in London one day that way I can take loads of pictures and nonchalantly blog about it like it’s something I do everyday.

No…I’m not spontaneous…today I’m going to wake up in my sleeping bag. And tomorrow…same…only OOO I’ll be in Phoenix…for class though, so it doesn’t really count

Goodnight, love love love Z

In the true style of tumblr… (actually, probably not, i would have to add some gifs first…and the last would have to look more awkward…i just know it)

Zoe all posed online all makeuped and hair did…

Zoe behind the screen…munchin on oranges, sippin her tea…

Zoe with enough time to get ready for class…

Zoe usually (scawy I know)…

Hi Maddie! So today I did absolute nothing. It was quite lovely. Monday-Wednesday I’ll be attending a conference with my class in Phoenix about the Central Arizona Project which is a canal that brings water from the Colorado River to the metropolitan desert that is Phoenix. I’m actually looking forward to learning more about water issues in the southwest. Am I looking forward to Phoenix? not so much. My access to electricity will be very limited…soo might by chances for uploading :( jussoyakno i’m not slacking here :)

love love love,

P.S. I’m having issues trying to reply back to your notes. Is it possible? Also, your questions page doesn’t work and I can’t leave a note to youuuu :(

Hi Maddie! Today was exhausting and full of errands. Stumbling on these book marks made my day. Oh and the middle one…I’ve read 7 out of 50. The LOTR triology is considered ONE book…and that’s what I’ll start next after block. Goodnight! Love love love, Z

Field Notes from the Verde River Headwaters

Hi Maddie! So I’ve never really thought about water. I mean. I do try drink 1.75 liters everyday and otherwise be conscious of my use now that I’m in my first apartment 1000 miles away from home and paying bills and what not. But the question of where my water comes from never really crossed my mind. It must be stored in a resevior…somewhere…and just like Sesame Street showed me, when I turn on the tap I was draining water from a poor fishy in a pond…somewhere…? Beyond that I just didn’t know. It’s like when you try to think about what’s outside the universe…even just the known universe. Your mind just goes blank trying to compute infinities and moves on.

Well in this case the difficulty computing doesn’t come from the infinite, it comes from simply not digging deeper outside your own bubble into that which is finite…not out of laziness, not because you don’t care, but because the issue was never presented to you while you where you were standing with real Earth beneath your feet and real clear blue water and sky before your eyes.

This is Chino Valley, AZ…a 45 minute drive from where I live. This is where, according to The Nature Conservancy, groundwater beneath my feet feeds the Verde River. This is where water is already being pumped 5 times more than it can be naturally replenished each year, causing wells near the edges of the valley to dry up. That is where, every year the water table drops (was it 2.5 ft?), and “water can only drop 40 more feet before springs stop flowing.” The springs are in the center of the valley which is slightly lower in elevation than the edges - like a bowl - and as water levels drop, wells closer and closer to the center will dry. This is where (see image above) a dammed lake once was. And this is the same place where the city in which I now live wants to start pumping for groundwater?

Obviously this is a big issue and this is only a very short synthesis of lots of pages and pages of background reading and hours of listening out in class today, but obviously there is something here that really doesn’t compute. Prescott wants to pump from an already drying aquifer that barely has enough to provide for 195 miles of habitat, recreation, and other uses? …

(Yes, those are bullet holes. stupid bud weiser drinking atv riders…)

And I still have questions…Is this is the water that Phoenix once used, but switched to Colorado River water when they got scared of wells running dry? And even if it’s not, does the Colorado River (which flows through the Grand Canyon) have the same issues at its headwaters? If so what does that mean for intensive agriculture in Southern Arizona (corn does NOT need to be grown in a DESERT!!!), and what does that mean for the existence of growing metropolitan centers like Phoenix?

I have a lot to explore. At least I’m getting some ideas for my final project coming up! And after that I wanna know what’s going on with our very own Trinity Aquifer. One step at a time…

Hi Maddie! So yesterday I didn’t have class. Woke up, as Joey likes to say, “at the crack of noon.” I decided I finally need exercise so I walked around downtown to.windowshop. Downtown has the cutest little boutiques that are actually affordable…unlike the ones by TCU where 75% off sales mean that a deal is considered no less than $40. Cute stuff but ffff that…ill stick to after christmas and end of season at the mall…Anyway this top reminds me of one you used to.wear. Which might be a false memory, but I also remember when you and Jackie used to use phrases ya’ll learned in French class. And I know…windowshopping isn’t exercise. After that I got back into the gym for the first time since….september.
Pics from today soon to come!

Hi Maddie! So today after class and my readings I finally got off my butt again for the first time since the end of break instead of coming straight home haha. It’s just so cold! (Liesss I just don’t go out). My roomate and I walked around downtown. I remember the first time I ever saw these things. They re next to my favorite organic coffee shop and bakery which is inside a lil boutique and restaurant center that used to be the old firehouse station. Yeah the firehydrant thing seemed really cute yet random till i realized this lil piece of history. The entire downtown is historic like stockyards but a lot nicer a lil bigger and with a lil more to do than eat steak and stare at edward scissorhand-esque steer shaped bushes. At night with all the outdoor seating and and lights it looks pretty. I wish I had a picture of the sqaure in december. All the trees reminded me of the pier one plaza.
Anyway yes…of everything I could have captured today I choose firehydrants lol.

Love love love

Yeeahhh :-) it was just an extra one he had. And I have Campbell’s 8th ed. too! Are you selling yours back or keeping it forever? I can’t decide…

HI MADDIE! So I feel like I’m more excited about this than I should be, but I finally relented and downloaded my first app ever (for real): tumblr. I thought if I could upload a picture pretty much right as it’s being taken on my computer…then why not do the same with my phone? You’re probably like lol Zoe I do that all the time. Well I’m just excited because this project just got ten times easier. No more storing pictures for days before I finally get around to emailing them to myself and then from there saving to my laptop and then blah blah blah. Long story short: I’m excited.
Now I promised you current pictures. This is my window/not really a window. On the otherside of it is a storage room that leads to the backyard. Usually in every dorm or apartment I’ve had I put up a collage to remind me of things. This is my lazy version of such a thing. There’s Buddha, a card, Einstein throwing a paper plane, gifts from Jackie <3, my most recent greyhound ticket, a packet of hot chocolate, a watch, an elmo hat etc…and yes all of these thing have equal sentimental value :D (ESPECIALLY Elmo).
Can’t wait to see your photo of the day!
Love love love, Z
P.S. I hate pie.
